Event organizers Tim Slater of the University of Wyoming, Rick Sanchez from Clear Creek Middle School in Buffalo, Wyoming, and Matt Scott from 91黑料 in Torrington, Wyoming were excited to bring an event of this type to the area.

鈥淚t is an awesome opportunity for the youth in the area have a chance to see and use this technology hands on,鈥� Scott said.

The event was open to all K-12 students as well as college level students.

鈥淲e had 19 students from Torrington, Pine Bluffs, Cheyenne, Glendo, LaGrange, Veteran, Wyoming, and Morrill, Nebraska,鈥� Scott added. 鈥淎t the college level, there were two students from 91黑料 competing.鈥�

The students were given a lesson in drone laws and took a test, which earned them a TRUST certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration. This certificate shows that they were made aware of the rules and regulations for recreational UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) pilots. The rules include: not flying over 400 ft. above the ground, not flying over people, not flying into clouds, keeping the speed under 100 miles per hour, not to be reckless, keeping it in sight at all times, as well as other rules to keep themselves and everyone around them safe.

After they earned their TRUST certificates, they were taught how the controls of the drones worked and allowed to practice flying in the foyer of the ATEC building.

鈥淚 found some pottery and thought, 鈥榯his is cool,鈥� Howard said. 鈥淚 wanted to be an archaeologist.鈥�

However, in high school everyone discouraged him saying there were no jobs in archaeology, and he should travel a different career path.

After graduating high school, he was working for a lady doing gardening. When he told her what his dream would be, she encouraged him to go after his dream, and he did.

He enrolled in the State University of New York at Geneseo and received his bachelor鈥檚 degree. After graduating from Geneseo he went to Ohio State University and earned his master鈥檚 degree.

Two years into his studies at Ohio State he was asked to teach a class, which at first, Howard wasn鈥檛 very excited about.

鈥淚鈥檓 originally a shy person鈥� and the thought of speaking in front of a class was not attractive. But they offered to provide tuition and a stipend. That was the selling point and he agreed to teach and 鈥淚 really enjoyed teaching.鈥�

After graduating he went into the PhD program, finishing in 2010. By that time he found himself in Texas working on the Gault Site.

The site contains strata dating back to more than 13,500 years B.C. and prior to the appearance of Clovis. The Gault Site is in Florence, Texas on the Williamson-Bell County line along the Buttermilk Creek.

鈥淲e were finding stuff earlier than Clovis,鈥� Howard said. Clovis was believed to have been the earliest humans in the western hemisphere dating back roughly 11,500 years B.C. near the end of the Last Glacial Period.

At the Gault Site Howard worked with local ranchers and other public officials on how to preserve artifacts they may find. He also worked with archeology tourists, and other archeologists from around the world who came to dig to confirm for themselves the 鈥極lder than Clovis鈥� deposits.

While working at the site Howard took an adjunct professor position at Austin Community College. He taught at ACC for 12-13 years.

鈥淚 enjoyed the teaching,鈥� Howard said. 鈥淚 developed a study abroad program and took students to England to study early Roman culture.鈥�

Then, 鈥渙ut of the blue I got a call asking if I鈥檇 be interested in teaching at 91黑料 (91黑料) in Torrington, Wyoming,鈥� he said. 鈥淢y first thought, 鈥榃here is Torrington, Wyoming?鈥欌��

91黑料 received funds to develop an education-based tourism program, according to 91黑料 Vice-president of Student and Academic Services John Hansen. Working with the Sunrise Historic and Prehistoric Preservation Society (SHAPPS) the college plans to develop an integrated approach that looks at聽 identifying key assets in our area, developing partnerships to maximize their reach, and then producing聽a program and training that will draw tourism from around the world.

Steve Howard, the new professor of Archaeology and Anthropology, explains changes he is making to a classroom at 91黑料 to make it a lab. He will work to develop a degree and certificate program in Archaeology and Anthropology at 91黑料.

鈥淒r. Howard rose above the rest (of the candidates) because of his extensive experience running field schools and his background of working with students at a community college,鈥� Hansen said. 鈥淢oreover, his experience in working on dig sites around the world was also a key factor. One of his most unique qualities is that he is interested in sharing his passion of anthropology and archeology with students of all age ranges.鈥�

After finding Torrington on the map, Howard came for a visit.

鈥淓veryone was very enthusiastic about bringing a tourism program to 91黑料 and working with SHAPPS at Sunrise (Wyoming),鈥� Howard said. 鈥淚t was very intriguing.鈥�

Some of the work with SHAPPS at the Sunrise Mine is on the Powars II Paleoindian Archaeological Site. The site is thought to be the oldest know mining operation in both North and South America. The ochre mine dates back over 13,000 years.

Ochre is a powdery mineral used by some Native American tribes as a pigment for a variety of ritual purposes. Ochre comes in a variety of different colors. At the site at Sunrise, the natural color of the ochre is red.

鈥淚 thought, 鈥業 can yank myself out of Austin and come up here,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t also doesn鈥檛 hurt to have mountains so close.鈥�

At 91黑料 Howard鈥檚 official title is Professor of Archaeology and Anthropology. He will work to develop a degree and certificate program.

鈥淒r. Steven Howard is a perfect fit for the needs of the college, community and archaeology/anthropology,鈥澛爀xecutive director of SHAPPS聽Geri Zeimens said. 鈥淭here has been a need of another fully trained archaeologist in the area for quite some time. The area that we live is so rich in historic and prehistoric sites. Many of these sites are eroding in the North Platte Valley area.鈥�

His work in a community college setting, an agricultural community and his work on archaeological sites similar to the site at the 鈥渉istoric and prehistoric town of Sunrise,鈥� makes Howard a great fit, according to Zeimens.

Starting in the Spring semester of 2024 Howard will teach Biological Anthropology (ANTH 1100), the study of the physical or biological aspects of humans. It is a four-credit class that counts as a Lab Science. He will also teach Cultural Anthropology (ANTH 1200), the study of human societies and cultures through time and across the world. The three-credit course counts as a Social and Behavioral Science class. The third course will be in Archaeology (ANTH 1300), the study of human societies, cultures, and behavior in the past, through analysis of the material remains they鈥檝e left behind. This course counts as a Social and Behavioral Science at 91黑料 and transfers as a Natural Science at the University of Wyoming.

This summer Howard will offer an Archaeology Field School (ANTH 2460) at the Sunrise Mine. The field school will cover field and basic laboratory methods in archaeology for data collection, analysis, and interpretation of cultural material.

鈥淐oncurrent with the Archaeological Field School in the summer, we have a number of public archaeology programs planned,鈥� Howard said. 鈥淭hese include Archaeology Days, in which school or civic groups can participate in workshops, tours, activities, and even excavations at Sunrise Mine.鈥�

Howard is also planning to host an International Volunteer Work Program. It is a program that works through Volunteers for Peace and brings people together from around the world to work on different projects.

鈥淚鈥檝e been involved with the International Volunteer Work Program since 2015 in New York,鈥� Howard said. 鈥淚t is a great opportunity for local people to meet people from all over the world.鈥�

Since arriving at 91黑料 Howard has been traveling the state talking with students, historical societies, and others about the new program being offered at 91黑料 and the school鈥檚 partnership with SHAPPS at Sunrise Mine.

鈥淭he partnership with SHAPPS is wonderful; they are a connected group that believes in education, preservation, and sharing the historic assets of the area,鈥� Hansen said. 鈥淭he whole partnership under the Wyoming Innovation Partnership (WIP) works because of John Voight, (Land Owner) of Sunrise mine.聽 John’s belief in preservation and willingness to share and invite the College to partnership in this historic task is unmatched.鈥�

The new Archaeology and Anthropology programs at 91黑料 and the partnership with SHAPPS will give students an opportunity to gain hands on experience in uncovering the history of Eastern Wyoming.

鈥淭his is a great opportunity to learn how to fly a drone and have fun doing it,鈥� 91黑料 Precision Agriculture Instructor Matt Scott said. 鈥淭he college will provide the drones; you just have to show up.鈥�

The challenge is for any students from kindergarten to college to learn to fly a drone in the morning, starting at 10 a.m. Then at 12:30 p.m., students will have the opportunity to race a drone through an obstacle course.

鈥淪tudents and educators are welcome to come and participate,鈥� Scott said.

The cost is $10 to enter. Participates will be divided into two different groups, K-12 and college students and teachers. Prizes will be awarded in each division. To pre-register visit聽. Participates will also receive a Wyoming Drone Flight t-shirt (while supplies last).

鈥淚 am very happy to receive this honor,鈥� Djurovic said. 鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 have been able to accomplish this without my teammates and my coach.

Djurovic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia led the Lancers in kills and points this year.

鈥淚 think Ana being named to the first team is a well-deserved honor,鈥� Lancer volleyball coach George Hamilton said. 鈥淎na is a great player. She is our go to person. When we needed a point, she was the one we turned to.鈥�

The Lancer outside hitter averaged 4.4 points per set. She averaged 3.68 kills per set, and 3.51 digs per set.

The All Region team is made up of the top 16 players in the region, eight on the first team and eighth on the second team, according to the volleyball coaches in the region.

鈥淭wo years in a row shows the progress I have made and the progress we have made as a program,鈥� Djurovic said.

The Lancers finished the season with a 10-21 record. Djurovic plans to continue playing in the states next season.

鈥淭his expansion project will provide new workforce training to meet the need for a highly skilled workforce for the construction trades,鈥� 91黑料 President Jeffry Hawes said. 鈥淚 would like to share that many partners have joined the effort with financial support that include the City of Douglas, City of Glenrock, and 91黑料.鈥�

The grant is for the construction of the new facility on the Douglas Campus to house the new program.

鈥淭here is a high demand for skilled laborers in the construction industry,鈥� 91黑料 vice-president of Douglas Campus Margaret Farley said. 鈥淚t (the program) is important to Wyoming because we are trying to diversify our economy. 鈥�

The new Construction Technology Program will be a one or two-year program. The first year will focus on basic construction skills and will provide graduates with a certificate. The second year will focus on management and could lead to an Associate鈥檚 degree.

The next step will be to go out for an RFP, RFQ for an architect, Farley said.

Paige Miller

At age six, Paige Miller would follow her older brothers around at livestock judging competitions and judge the livestock, even though she was too young to compete in 4-H. When she was able to join 4-H at eight-years-old, she won her division.

鈥淚 was undefeated from eight-years-old to 16-years-old,鈥� Miller said. Locally and at the state level, she was the top livestock judge in her division.

Competing in livestock judging, Miller said, is great in helping you develop character, learn leadership, communication, and decision-making skills, and much more.

鈥淚 did 4-H and FFA,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was on some very competitive judging teams.鈥�

Miller grew up on a ranch in Goshen County, Wyoming, raising club calves. Her family also owned a feedlot.

After graduating high school, she attended Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas on a livestock judging scholarship. At Butler, Miller was a member of the Junior College Livestock Judging Team of the Year. She also was an Academic All American.

鈥淢y biggest achievement was winning High Individual at the North American in Louisville, Kentucky,鈥� Miller said. 鈥淢y experience in junior college was very enlightening.

From Butler, Miller went to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado on a livestock judging scholarship.

鈥淲e were the first team from Colorado State to win the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since 2001,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t was a very competitive team and we won a number of contests.

Miller graduated from CSU with an Ag Business degree in 2022 and became 91黑料s鈥� head livestock judging coach in the summer of 2023.

鈥淚 wanted to return to Goshen County and give back to the community that has helped make me who I am today,鈥� Miller said. 鈥淲e are such an Ag community and I see a lot of potential.鈥�

Community support and the resources available, such as good livestock to work with, and the support of the college gives her confidence in what is possible at 91黑料.

She is also 鈥渂ig on family,鈥� and being close to her parents, Paul Jr. and Christine, and her two older brothers, P.D. and Skyler, is important to Miller.

So when the position opened at 91黑料, Miller packed up her two Bulldogs, Mojo and Nora, and headed back to Goshen County to lead the Lancer鈥檚 Livestock Judging Team.

鈥�91黑料 is excited to have Paige Miller join the coaching and instructional staff,鈥� 91黑料 President Jeffry Hawes said. 鈥淧aige鈥檚 personal experience in livestock evaluation and judging shows at the local, regional and national level will provide a wealth of knowledge to our students.鈥�

Both President Hawes and Miller see a bright future for the Lancer Livestock Judging team.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 team is a very fun group of students,鈥� Miller said. 鈥淚鈥檓 very satisfied with their character and their work ethic.鈥�

The 91黑料 Livestock Judging Team, this year, has five freshman and two sophomores. The freshman year is 鈥渓ike a practice year,鈥� she said. The sophomore year is the competition year.

鈥淲e will not hit as many contests this year (because of the low number of sophomores on the team), but we will next year.鈥�

This year Miller said the team will spend much of their time and energy in staying focused and development. However, Miller is heightening standards.

鈥淥ur goal is to be in the top 10 at every contest next year,鈥� she said. 鈥淲e want to build confidence in the team members and give them lots of exposure.鈥�

Moving forward Miller wants to draw in a more diverse group of students from different backgrounds and different areas of the country.

鈥淚 want to develop good stockmen,鈥� she said. These stockmen are not only good judges in competition, but can 鈥済o out into the pasture with a 60 year old cattleman, who knows their stuff, and make decisions that are accessible and beneficial in the real world.鈥�

Livestock judging is not easy, Miller explains. 鈥淵ou have to be able to examine the livestock, evaluate them, and know how to pick the best. Then you have to be able to define your choices. Whether competition, or judging a fair or livestock show, its hard work, but very rewarding. You have to be mentally tough to judge.鈥�

Josh Chapman

91黑料鈥檚 Josh Chapman finished in the top 20 at the Thunderbird National Preview Tournament held in Hobbs, New Mexico. The National Preview brought together community college golfers from across the country.

鈥淚’m proud of the way Josh played through 54 holes,鈥� 91黑料 Head Golf Coach Zach Smith said. 鈥淭he weather we had was exactly what Josh is used to in England.鈥�

Chapman, a freshman at 91黑料 from Redruth, England, finished in a three-way tie for 17^th.

鈥淎ll the guys played well but I know they felt like they could play better if we qualify for the tournament聽in May,鈥� Smith said.

Other Lancers competing in the National Preview included Tytan Birchell, Braylon Bingham, Leander Suttka, Ryker Dunkley, and Taiki Sugawara.

鈥淚t’s always聽great to play the national聽championship聽course before聽we hopefully play in May,鈥� Smith said. 鈥淚t’s a different course than we’ve seen in the past, so it was huge to get some rounds in against some of the best in the country.鈥�
